For two decades, being found online meant ranking on a page of ten blue links. Today, a growing share of buyers ask an AI assistant instead — and receive a single, synthesized answer. If your business isn't part of that answer, you may never be considered at all.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your business easy for AI-powered search experiences to understand, trust and cite. It doesn't replace SEO; it builds on it.
How AI answers are assembled
Most AI search experiences combine a language model with information retrieved from the web or a search index. The model draws on sources it can parse easily and that appear credible, then summarizes them. That means two things matter more than ever: clarity and trust.
Five foundations of GEO
- Answer real questions directly. Structure pages around the questions your buyers ask, and answer each one plainly in the first sentence or two before adding detail.
- Make your facts unambiguous. Your company name, services, locations and contact details should be consistent everywhere — your website, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles.
- Use structured data. Schema.org markup for your organization, services, FAQs and articles helps machines interpret your content with less guesswork.
- Demonstrate expertise. Specific, original insight — examples, processes, honest trade-offs — is more citable than generic copy that repeats what everyone else says.
- Keep the technical basics strong. Fast, crawlable, well-structured pages remain the foundation for both traditional search and AI retrieval.
What GEO is not
GEO is not a trick for manipulating AI systems, and no one can guarantee your brand will be mentioned in a particular answer. Be wary of tactics that promise otherwise. The durable approach is the same one that has always worked: publish genuinely useful, accurate information and make it easy to consume.
The businesses AI recommends are usually the ones that explain themselves most clearly.
A simple starting checklist
- Audit how AI assistants currently describe your business and competitors.
- Add a clear FAQ section to your key service pages.
- Implement Organization, Service and FAQPage structured data.
- Make sure business details match across every public profile.
- Publish one in-depth, experience-based article per month on topics your buyers care about.
GEO rewards the same discipline as good marketing: know your audience, answer their questions honestly and make your expertise visible. Start with the fundamentals and measure how your visibility changes over time.
